BG’s Positively Speaking

Depending On Luck?

Of the many studies and surveys on the subject of retirement financing, there is one that I read a few years ago that has stuck with me. The topic of the study was Retirement Financing in Canada. The survey asked Canadians HOW they were financing their retirement. I was amazed that over 60% of Canadians hoped to win the lottery or receive an inheritance. They depend on luck.

Now, I understand that luck can happen to anyone at any time. But you can’t depend on it! Stephen Leacock once said, “I am a great believer in luck, and I find that the harder I work, the more I have of it.” You have to go out in life and sow some seeds, putting effort and investing in yourself and your talents. If you work hard and give luck a chance to “knock” on your door, you will better prepare yourself for retirement.

Now, there’s no guarantee, but luck occurs when preparedness and opportunity come together. If you are not out there working on your own behalf. You have shut, locked, bolted and barricaded yourself against luck coming to your door by learning new skills and improving the ones you already have.

When you’ve opened yourself to luck “knocking on your door,” you may not “get lucky” in the generally accepted meaning of the phrase. But, you will reap all the rewards from the investment and effort you have put into yourself…you will have made your own “luck.” This is the most rewarding kind of luck you can experience, and if the saying “much attracts more” has any truth in it, your “lottery ship” may still come in. One thing you can be sure of is that you should…

NEVER Depend On Luck Alone!

Alberta Bound

At the urging of his doctor, Bill moved to Alberta. After settling in, he met a neighbour who was also an older man. “Say, is this really a healthy place?” Bill asked.”It sure is,” the man replied. “When I first arrived here I couldn’t say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn’t have the strength to walk across a room and I had to be lifted out of bed.” “That’s wonderful!” said Bill. “How long have you been here?”  “I was born here.”

Postal Communication

Bernie got a phone call from the post office today… complaining that his dog is attacking a mail carrier on a bike. Bernie told them, “It can’t possibly be my dog… he doesn’t even know how to ride a bike.”

Editors Quote Book

“Few things are more satisfying than seeing your children have teenagers of thier own”.

Points to Ponder

  • I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.
  • Gardening Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it’s a useful plant.
  • Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
  • Life is sexually transmitted
  • If quitters never win, and winners never quit, then who is the fool who said, “Quit while you’re ahead?”
