BG’s Positively Speaking

“So, You Need A Little Help, Eh?”

There are times in life when we feel that no one cares about what is happening to us, that there is no one out there to give us the help we need. So we make noises complain, settle down in our recliners and wait to be proved correct, right?

Wrong! When we most need help, we should make a more significant effort unless we are looking for a handout rather than a hand-up. Robert Schuller coined the phrase, “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.”

If we make a more significant effort to help ourselves by taking a positive and active role in our lives, we will be surprised how much help is out there. Assistance will not come knocking at our door. We must go out and find it. When we become active, we show others that we care about our situation and that we’re willing to do something about it.

The solution to our problem is found, mainly through our willingness to change, take action, and go the extra mile. We will then attract to us those that can help us to achieve our objectives.

“If you need a helping hand – first look at the end of your own arm!”

The Way To Heaven

A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store. As he waited, a man approached him and asked, “Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?”

The little boy replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street a couple of blocks and turn to your right.” The man thanked the boy kindly and said, “I’m the new pastor in town. I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.”

The little boy replied with a chuckle. “Awww, come on… you don’t even know the way to the Post Office.”

The Day the Clowns Cried

In mid-20th century America, a typical circus travelled from town to town by train, performing under a huge canvas tent called the  “big top.” The  Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was no exception: what made it stand out was that it was the largest circus in the country. Its big top could seat 9,000 spectators around its three rings; A coating of 1,800 pounds (820 kg) of paraffin wax dissolved in 6,000 US gallons (23,000 L) of gasoline. The standard method of waterproofing at the time.

On July 6, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, the worst tragedy in American circus history occurred when the tent catches fire during a performance to a crowd of 6,000 to 8,000, mainly women and children enjoying the afternoon matinee. The majority of the 167 deaths and 700 injuries being caused by people stampeding out of the exits. The cause of the fire was never determined. Some believed it was arson, others that it was a carelessly tossed match. A picture that appeared in several newspapers of sad faced clown Emmett Kelley holding a bucket of water led to the event becoming known as “The day the clowns cried”.

One Good Deed

A man appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked. “I can think of one thing,” the man offered. “Once on a trip to South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I told them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker, smacked him in his face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. Then, I yelled, ‘Now back off, or I’ll hurt you all!’’ St. Peter was impressed. “When did all this happen?” he asked. The man replied, “Just a couple of minutes ago.”
