BG’s Positively Speaking

Control Yourself

Most people I know have dreams they would like to realize. I have, DO YOU? Many are looking for some measure of achievement in their lives. I am, ARE YOU? If you answered yes to one or both of these questions, you would first have to take control…  OF YOURSELF! Yes, you will have to practice self-discipline. Without self-discipline, your dreams and goals will never become a reality. They will remain just dreams.

Self-discipline is not easy to achieve in our “do it now,” “on the fly,” digital world. No matter how much talent you have or how many opportunities come your way, without self-discipline, you are lost. Author H. Jackson Brown Jr. put it this way, “talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be forwards, backwards or sideways.”

Self-discipline is necessary. How, then, do you cultivate an attitude and environment of self-discipline? And increase your chances of achieving your dreams? Read on!

  1. You must decide what you want. What are your goals? Write them down!
  2. Make a list of what needs to be done to move toward your goals.
  3. Make another list of the areas of your life, mind and environment that need discipline. Then start to apply that discipline.
  4. Eliminate excuses. Stop the habit of making excuses for your lack of self-discipline. Instead, face the truth —- YOU are the reason why what is needed to be done has not been done.

We must realize that persistence and patience, combined with self-discipline and self-control, will allow us to achieve our dreams.

Take Responsibility — Control Yourself

And They Call It …….?

We often come across things that have unusual names. When we do, we usually have no idea how those names originate. Here is one of those names that may need a little explanation.

The topic is…The Poop Deck.

The Poop Deck is the roof of a cabin built at the rear of a ship(the “aft” or “stern”) and forms part of the superstructure. The name originates from the French (La Poupe) and the Latin (Puppis), meaning “stern.”

Technically the poop deck would be the stern deck. In a sailing ship, the “poop cabin” was also known as the stern or “after” cabin. Its roof, usually elevated, acted as the poop deck. The craft would be steered from the quarter-deck, immediately in front of the poop deck, by the helmsman. The high position of the poop deck at the stern provides an excellent place for observation.

Today, functions, once carried out on the poop deck, are now performed from the bridge, usually located in the superstructure. The picture shows the quarter-deck, Immediately behind (aft) of the mainmast, complete with the steering wheel(Helm). The poop deck brings up the rear(stern).

Insurance

Al’s barn burned, and his wife, Susan, called the insurance company. Susan told the insurance company, “We had that barn insured for fifty thousand, and I want my money.” The agent replied, “Whoa there, just a minute, Susan. Insurance doesn’t work quite like that. We will ascertain the value of what was insured and provide you with a new one of comparable worth.” There was a long pause before Susan replied, “Then I’d like to cancel the policy on my husband.”
