BG’s Positively Speaking

Run Your Own Race

I lost count, years ago, of the number of times I was told, “Life is not a sprint but a marathon. You need to pace yourself accordingly.” I didn’t take much notice of them, except that they confirmed Life was indeed a race. At the time, I was a perfect example of a ‘Type A’ personality,  running from one task or project to another at breakneck speed. I gave little thought as to whether all the energy I was using was getting me closer to fulfilling my personal goals and dreams. In those days, I thought that the more things I did, the sooner I would win the race. It was a long time before I realized I was exercising ‘Wrong Thinking’ and that you should never believe everything you think. Just because you thought it doesn’t make it so.

Once I put ‘Right Thinking’ into practice, I saw that much of my time and energy was spent running my employer’s race. I had lost focus of what I wanted in Life and spent all my time and energy on building some other person’s dream. Now, I am not saying it’s wrong to run part of the race alongside another person. It’s when you give everything to the other person that you have entered into ‘Wrong Thinking.’

In Life, we must ask ourselves, “Is this the direction I want my life to travel?”. How we respond to that question will determine the level of commitment we have to our own dreams and ambitions. We’ll need to muster the strength to resist the temptation of taking the ‘easy way’ by placing our future into the hands of another person’s dreams and ambitions……..

An Unusual Phenomenon

An unusual sighting, a ‘rainbow cloud,’ was recently spotted above Tokyo. Pictures of it went viral on social media. Reports of an iridescent cloud visible over Tokyo were shared on Twitter. It didn’t take long before photos of the intriguing phenomenon made their way to the popular social media platform as well. It was, as the rumours described, a multi-coloured cloud that oddly resembled a rainbow. In reality, this optical phenomenon has a closer relationship to an ice halo than to a rainbow.

The Taxpayer

A taxpayer received a strongly worded “second notice” that his taxes were overdue. Hastening to the Tax office, he paid his bill, saying he had overlooked the first notice. “Oh,” confided the collector with a smile, “we don’t send out first notices. We have found that the second notices are more effective.”

A Golf Challenge

A young man, an avid golfer, had a few hours to spare one afternoon. Realizing that if he played very fast, he could get in 9 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off, an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Unable to say no, he allowed the older man to join him. To his surprise, the older man played pretty quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time.

Finally, they reached the 9th fairway, and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot, the old man finally said, “You know, when I was your age, I’d hit the ball right over that tree.

With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, smacked into the top of the tree trunk, and thudded back on the ground, not a foot from where it had initially lay. The old man commented, “Of course, when I was your age, that pine tree was only 3 feet tall.”

The Missing Husband

A woman reports to police that her husband is missing. The police arrive at her home to take a statement. Before leaving, they ask her for a description. “He’s 6 foot, 3 inches tall, has long blonde hair and a smile that makes everyone love him”, says the woman. Checking with the neighbour, they give him the description, and the neighbour says, “If that’s what she told you don’t believe her. He’s  5 foot 4inche tall, bald head and a permanent scowl on his face.”

After the police had left, the neighbour went to see the woman. When she came to the door, he asked her, “Why did you give such a misleading description of your husband?” She responded, “Just because I reported him missing doesn’t mean I want him back!”

From The West

The first politician from the West to become Prime Minister of Canada was John Diefenbaker. He hailed from Regina, Saskatchewan, where he grew up and started his political career. His boyhood home is now a museum on a 930-hectare lot in the city’s Wascana Centre.
