BG’s Positively Speaking

Learning and Growing

I have often written about success, in particular, what it is that successful people do to become successful. I’ve pointed out that success is the result of personal growth. That the ability to increase one’s knowledge, and apply it, is critical. In past messages, I have said that successful people read, attend seminars, and get around people who can encourage and mentor them. I have also noted that one of the great ways to learn and grow is through DVDs and CDs (audiobooks are a great way of learning). One of the responses I frequently get to that suggestion is, “But I don’t have time to do that.”

Let me tell you what I did.

I turned my car into a ‘Mobile Learning Centre.’ I stocked it with audio tapes and CDs of books, seminars, and talks. Whenever I started the car and before I left the driveway, I would press ‘Play.’ I would use my time driving as an opportunity to learn; it’s surprising how much you absorb even though you are concentrating on driving. I would listen to my programme even on a 5-minute trip.

Today there is almost unlimited access to this type of material, At no charge using your computer, through YouTube, Google, Ted.com and many other internet sources. If you want to learn more about ‘success principles’ … Google it!. If you would like to listen/watch a particular speaker … Google them!

If money is tight, there is another way of getting this material into your hands. I have found many CD and DVD recordings by great speakers, trainers and motivators at the library and hidden in places like the Salvation Army Store, Goodwill Store, and Habitat Re-Stores.

The Passing Parade

Barbie mania has taken the world by storm, including in Brazil, where Burger King is selling a sandwich with a bright pink sauce that looks like “chewed bubblegum” and has a “smoky” flavour, according to Burger King. The BK Barbie Combo comes with a cheeseburger, a pink vanilla-flavoured milkshake, a doughnut sprinkled with pink frosting and an order of Ken’s potatoes (also known as fries). The combo is not expected to be offered in The US and Canada.

I got in line to watch Oppenheimer around lunchtime, but I realized it was three hours long, and I was starving. So I went to the Barbie queue instead.

The Blonde Guy And The Bet

Bob walked into a sports bar around 9:58 PM. He sat down next to a blonde guy at the bar and stared at the TV. The 10:00 PM news was coming on. The news crew was covering a story of a man on a ledge of a large building preparing to jump. The blonde guy looked at Bob and said, ‘Do you think he’ll jump?’  ‘You know,’ Bob answered, ‘I bet he’ll jump.’

The blonde guy responded, ‘Well, I bet he won’t.’ Bob placed a $20 bill on the bar and said, ‘You’re on!’ The guy jumped off the building just as the blonde put his money on the bar.

This upset the blonde, but he willingly handed his $20 to Bob, saying, ‘Fair’s Fair. Here’s your money.’ Bob replied, ‘I can’t take your money, I saw this earlier on the 6 PM news, and so I knew he would jump.’ The blonde guy replied, ‘I saw it too, but I didn’t think he’d do it again.’

Bob took the money……

The Screen Door

Janice had been bugging her husband, a carpenter, for over a decade to build a screen door for the kitchen. One day, to her delight, he made and installed one in less than two hours. It was both practical and pretty. She glanced towards the front door and wistfully remarked that one would also look good there. “Are you kidding?” he gasped. “You can’t just whip these things up, you know. It takes ten years to build a door like this.
