BG’s Positively Speaking

The Power Of Imagination

We are born with imagination, yet, in a large portion of the population, it is an underdeveloped aspect of the human mind. Sadly, many people don’t use what they have. Perhaps, as a child, they were not stimulated to use their imagination. Nobody taught them about books and how the written word can ‘fire up’ the imagination. Most of their stimulation came from others who used their imagination to interpret the written word into the visual images of movies and TV, where the imagination is supplanted by visual stimulation.

Imagination has powered some of the most outstanding achievements of humankind since the beginning of time. It has been the driving force in every advancement in the lives of humans, both technological and artistic.

Technology,  the discovery of fire, space travel, and computers have all sprung from human imagination. In the field of arts, from writing to performance, from painting to music, all have been born of someone’s imagination. Their creators first envisioned the buildings, monuments, and carved statues we admire.

All achievement begins with imagination. Our dreams are conceived in our imagination. Our ability to imagine what could be is primarily governed by the amount of stimulation we have exposed ourselves to. The more we stimulate our minds, the greater our ability to imagine great things. Imagination produces ideas. Ideas make dreams that, when acted upon, lead to achievements.

For further proof of the power of imagination, look at the field of medicine. In study after study, people are given a ‘Placebo’s’. Frequently, those taking them show and feel signs of healing because they believe they are taking the real thing. That belief is born in imagination, the greatest ‘Power Tool’ we possess.

Puzzled?

A silver-haired man calls his neighbour and says, “Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.” His neighbour asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?” The silver-haired man says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a rooster.” So, the neighbour decides to go and help with the puzzle.

Letting the neighbour in, he shows her where the puzzle is spread all over the table.

She studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to him and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.” She takes his hand and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax. And we’ll have a nice cup of tea.” then, with a deep sigh, she said, “But before we do …………

“Let’s put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.”

Will You Marry Me?

These two older people were living in a Florida mobile home park. He was a widower, and she was a widow. They had known one another for several years. One evening, there was a community supper in the big activity center. These two were at the same table, across from one another. As the meal went on, he made a few admiring glances at her and finally gathered his courage to ask her, “Will you marry me?” After a dramatic pause and precisely six seconds of ‘careful consideration,’ she answered. “Yes. Yes, I will.” The meal ended, and with a few more pleasant exchanges, they went to their respective residences.

The following day, he was troubled. “Did she say ‘yes’ or ‘no’?” He couldn’t remember. Try as he would, he could not recall. Not even a faint memory. With trepidation, he went to the telephone and called her. First, he explained to her that he didn’t remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he gained more courage, he asked her, “When I asked if you would marry me, did you say ‘Yes’ or did you say ‘No’?” He was delighted to hear her say, “Why, I said, ‘Yes, yes I will,’ and I meant it with all my heart.” Then she continued, “And I am so glad you called because I couldn’t remember who had asked me.”

Did You Know?

Mahatma Gandhi started the civil disobedience movement, leading to India’s independence after 250 years of British rule. He and his wife were only 13 years old when they entered a marriage arranged by their parents. Gandhi studied law in England and worked in South Africa for over 20 years, fighting for the rights of that country’s considerable population of Indian and Asian people. Gandhi was assassinated on Jan 30, 1948, at age 78. His assassin was Nathuram Godse, a member of a right-wing Hindu paramilitary organization. It was determined the reason for the assassination was Gandhi’s sympathy for the significant minority Muslim population in India. To this day, he is known as the father of India. His message of peaceful protest still resonates 75 years after his death.

A man rushed to see his Doctor, looking worried and all strung out. “Doctor, take a look at me. When I woke up this morning, I looked in the mirror. I saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin was all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes were bloodshot and bugging out, and I had this corpse-like look on my face! What’s WRONG with me, Doctor!?” The Doctor looks him over for a few minutes, then calmly says: “Well, I can tell you that there ain’t nothing wrong with your eyesight….”
