BG’s Positively Speaking

The Sweetest Sound

No Doubt, many of you, like me, have been visiting somewhere that you have rarely if ever, visited before. A place where you would not expect to hear your name being called out. You suddenly hear someone call your name; you are pleasantly surprised that someone has recognized you. Turning in the direction from which the sound of your name had come,  you realize it was a person with the same name that was being called, By a person you did not know. You carry on walking, but you are left with a feeling of disappointment that the sweet anticipation of an unexpected encounter will not happen.

It has often been said that hearing your name is amongst the sweetest sounds in the whole world. If you want to endear a person to you, use their name as often as possible in your conversation with them. Care should be taken to make the use natural and sincere. It will be a “turn-off” if you sound false and insincere. If you have trouble remembering names, try these tips:

  1. Repeat the person’s name to yourself several times while being introduced, then say the person’s name as many times as possible during your initial conversation.
  2. Concentrate on the person’s characteristics, what makes them different from others.
  3. Connect a characteristic with the name (i.e. “Bill, with the button-down collar” or “Susan suits suits”).
  4. Observe people; take time each day to observe others. This will help you find distinguishing features.

With practice, you will find it becomes easier and easier to remember and use other people’s names. This, in turn, will create a personal bond that will continue to grow. However, a word of caution, never let others know how you could remember their name, especially the one concerned. They may not appreciate the connection you made!

Your Name Is Your Most Personal Possession!

The Dress

Jennifer’s wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen her excitement – not even her parent’s nasty divorce. Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear and would be the best-dressed mother of the bride ever! A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father’s new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother! Jennifer asked her father’s new young wife to exchange it, but she refused. “Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I’m wearing it,” she replied. Jennifer told her mother, who graciously said, “Never mind, sweetheart, I’ll get another dress. After all, it’s your special day.” A few days later, they went shopping and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother. When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, “Aren’t you going to return the other dress? You really don’t have another occasion where you could wear it.”  Her mother just smiled and replied, “Of course I do, dear…I’m wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.”

 A Step Back In Time

On August 7, 1992, The public got its first glimpse inside Buckingham Palace as people were allowed to tour the London home of Queen Elizabeth II.

After the destructive fire at Windsor Castle earlier in the year, causing $62 million of damage and gutting 115 rooms. It was debated whether the repair work should be paid for by taxpayers or the royal family. Not being able to raise money through a public appeal, it was decided to open the palace’s doors to the public. For the first time in history. In an attempt to obtain the funds to repair Windsor Castle.

Within a week, they sold about three years’ worth of tickets for this “Open Doors” event, and it is now an annual happening. It takes place during the 10 weeks in summer when the Queen is at her Balmoral residence in Scotland. About half a million tourists a year pass through those famous wrought iron gates for the opportunity to see inside the palace walls.

Visitors can explore all 19 decadent State Rooms and the famous Picture Gallery. This has acted as the setting for many receptions and includes significant pieces of art by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto.

The Eyes Of The Beholder!

A little girl was standing in the street, pointing at the sky street saying,. “Look, an angel.” One person passing by her said laughingly, “No, that is only a cloud.” I thought to myself, “How wonderful it would be To see angels where there are only clouds, and how sad it would be to see only clouds where there are angels.”

Multiple Choice?

A young girl was attending her first wedding, watching the proceedings with interest for a while before growing restless. The groom was stood at the altar as six bridesmaids slowly walked up the aisle, one by one. Soon, the girl leaned over to her mom and whispered impatiently, “Why doesn’t he just hurry up and pick one?”
