BG’s Positively Speaking
Self Talk – Friend or Foe?
It is said that 70% of our conversations are with ourselves. Some people would respond with the quip, “It’s the only time I can have an intelligent conversation.” There may be more than a grain of truth in the joke.
Self-talk is the time we can talk ourselves into, or out of, the things we want to do. We can discuss the pros and cons of our situations, challenges and opportunities without the interruption of others. Or can we? Often we find ourselves allowing the naysayers, skeptics and dream-stealers to intrude on our private conversations, offering a good dose of “negative.” We allow their negative attitudes to prevail and dominate our self-talk. This is when self-talk becomes our enemy, preventing us from taking action in the direction we really want to go. This is because our mind has been dominated by outsiders.
Whenever this situation occurs, we must fight it, bringing everything we can to the battle with negative thoughts. One of the most powerful weapons we possess is recognizing that “the mind can only process one thought at a time.” With this knowledge, we must push out a negative thought and, in its place, allow a positive one to enter. It’s not easy, but we will find it becomes easier in time.
Let self-talk become our friend and ally; discuss how we will and why we should. Giving ourselves a positive dose of “I can” instead of “I can’t.”
Not all of our self-talk will result in action. Still, we will have taken control of our own minds and thought processes. We minimize the power that negative input has on us by taking control. As a result, we will be more positive knowing that we can do what we need to improve our lives.
Go ahead…eject the negative, and input the positive.
You might have heard that Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her 70th year as monarch. Along with snapping up collector teacups and T-shirts, loyal Britons can slather their excitement for the platinum jubilee onto their sandwiches with two renamed condiments from Heinz: HM Sauce (ordinarily known as HP Sauce) and Salad Queen (Salad Cream). Sky News suggested trying them on (Bucking)ham sandwiches or coronation chicken. “Releasing limited-edition bottles in time for the Jubilee felt like the perfect fit,” gushed Heinz brand manager Anke von Hanstein.

“The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself.”
– Oscar Wilde
An actress who suffered from an inferiority complex was complaining to her psychiatrist. “I’m a nothing!” she cried. “I can’t sing. I can’t remember my lines. I can’t dance, I can’t even act. I really don’t belong in show business.” “Why don’t you quit?” the doctor asked. “I can’t,” moaned the actress. “I’m a Star!”
The plane was flying low over some hills near Athens; a lady asked the stewardess: “What’s that stuff on those hills?” “Just snow,” replied the stewardess. “That’s what I thought,” said the lady, “but this fellow in front of me said it was Greece.”
21st Century Newspaper
I was visiting my daughter last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. “This is the 21st century,” she said. “We don’t waste money on newspapers. Here, use my iPad.”. I can tell you this… That fly never knew what hit him!

Did You Know?
We are now in the BBQ season. Therefore it is crucial that we, once again, refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ, the following chain of events is put into motion:
(1) The woman buys the food.
(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables and makes dessert.
(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man lounging beside the grill – drink in hand.
(4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three-meter exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can occur without the woman’s interference.
Here comes the critical part:
(5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.
(6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
(7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat looks great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another drink while he flips the meat.
(8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
(9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, and sauce and brings them to the table.
(10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
And most important of all:
(11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN, and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
(12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed her ‘night off’ and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women.
A young man visiting New York with his girl took her to nearby Coney Island Amusement Park. They had heard a lot about the Tunnel of Love and were very anxious to try it out. But when they got home, the kids expressed disappointment. “Well,” the young man said, “it was dark and damp and uncomfortable. Besides, we got soaking wet.” “How come?” asked a friend. “Did the boat leak?” The kid, looking amazed, said, “There’s a boat?”
