BG’s Positively Speaking

Get “Fired Up” !!!

In the late 1930s or early 1940s, a popular song by the Mills Brothers opened with the line, “I don’t want to set the world on fire .”The song had a great melody and beautiful harmony. Still, it was so laid back that it convinces you that the singers would never set anything on fire. It had that lazy – Sunday afternoon – sitting on the dock – eyes closed –  listening to the water lap against the shore feel to it. The funny thing was it set the world on fire and helped to make the Mills Brothers one of the world’s leading vocal groups.

I am writing about this song because I have found as I go through life that there are people for whom this song could be their Anthem. They tend to live their life with the enthusiasm of a condemned man heading to the gallows, barely noticing the world around them. There doesn’t appear to be any spark in them. There are, no doubt, some things in their life that they take pleasure in, and they may have had more than their fair share of hard knocks, but life is hard for us all. We have to get over it and go forward.

To get more out of life and make a difference for ourselves and the lives of those around us, we need to put more into it. Build a fire within us and let it light the way. We must be prepared to be let down, get burned, and be disappointed while continuing to stoke the fire. It is from that fire we derive our enthusiasm. It’s surprising what you can do if only you will

Teamwork

Years ago, a master organist performed a concert before a sellout crowd. In those days, someone had to pump large bellows backstage to provide air for the organ’s pipes. At the end of each section, the organist received thunderous applause from the delighted audience. At the end of the concert, the organist stood to announce his final number, saying to the audience, “I will now close by playing …..”, and announced the title of his final masterpiece.

Seating himself before the keyboard, he adjusted his music and checked the stops. Then, with feet placed over the pedals and hands over the keys, he began with a mighty chord. But the organ remained silent. An uncomfortable silence fell over the audience.

Just then, a voice was heard from backstage; “Say, WE.”

The Words We Use

(A brief look at the words and phrases we use in everyday communications)

Meaning: Very Poor, Living in Poverty

Usage: “After he lost his business during the pandemic, Robert went from being a wealthy man to being as poor as a church mouse.”

Origins:  It appears that this saying originated In England during the 1600s. It started out as “Hungry as a church mouse .”At that time, churches had no kitchens or pantries with food. So, a mouse unlucky enough to live in a church would go hungry unless it re-located to a tavern or house. Over time the saying was changed, and “As poor as a church mouse.” was adopted in many countries worldwide.

Bill and Ben

As Poor As A Church Mouse;

Bill and Ben had spent the night at the pub and were deep in conversation on their way home. Neither of them was paying much attention to where they were walking when suddenly, Ben fell down a manhole. Not knowing what to do, Bill called down the manhole to Ben, “Is it dark down there?”  “I don’t know,” responded Ben. “I can’t see anything.”

Logical?

During the census, a lady was asked what her age was. “Let me see, she said; “I was married when I was 18, my husband was 30. He is now 60,  twice as old as he was then. So, that makes me 36.”
