BG’s Positively Speaking

The Greatest Gift

In my book ‘Positively Speaking,’ I write about the beginnings of this column and how others taught and mentored me in the principles of success and positive thinking. When the reader finishes the book, I expect that I will have ‘Added Value’ to them, just as those who taught me had ‘Added Value’ to my life. One thing is for sure: the greatest gift you can give is to add value to the lives of others. True success is not measured by how much money we accumulate but by the value we have added to the lives of those we encounter on our journey.

Adding value to those we meet during our daily routine, who we may never meet again, is not a monumental task. It does, however, require an awareness of others, of the little things that make a difference to most people. You can add value to people with something as simple as a smile, a word of thanks or encouragement, an acknowledgment that they exist. There are many more significant ways of adding value, and if you are in a position to do so, that’s great, but never underestimate the value of that small gesture; most people want to be recognized for something, no matter how small.

Start each day by asking, “Who can I add value to today? “You will enjoy a much better life experience than those who start their day with, “Who will add value to me today?”   I’m lucky; hopefully, I can reach out and add value to others with my writing. I get to add value in two ways: in person and with the written word.

Who Will YOU Add Value to Today?

Sad Announcement

A teacher shocked his school when he announced he was resigning and moving to a drier climate. Afterwards, a distraught student came to him with tears in her eyes, “Oh, teacher, we are going to miss you so much. We don’t want you to leave!” The teacher said, “Now, now, don’t cry. The teacher who takes my place might be even better than me.””Yeah,” replied the student, with a tone of disappointment. “That’s what the last teacher said, too.”-

What Will They Think Of Next?

There was a time when you went to fill your gas tank, you didn’t get out of the car; it was done by an attendant. Well, those days are returning without the attendant. Danish startup Autofuel has developed a robotic arm capable of refuelling various vehicles at gas stations without human assistance. The robotic system can handle different fuels: electricity, LNG, hydrogen, and gasoline.

A Nestle fuel station in Finland was used as the pilot site to test the futuristic refuelling system – a robotic arm that can locate a car’s fuel tank door, select the correct fuel type, and operate the pump without any human assistance. The third-generation Autofuel robotic system was in testing for over a year, and the Danish company is now expanding into multiple Scandinavian and European locations. The system is quickly being adopted by enthusiastic drivers, and although it may be a while before refuelling robots become mainstream, Autofuel believes they will become invaluable once truly autonomous vehicles finally hit the roads. Some automakers are already producing cars that have the unique refuelling door required.

Waiting For Johnny

Little Johnny is an hour late arriving home from school. “Where were you?” asks dad. Little Johnny replied, “I helped a Granny cross the road!”  “I’m proud of you! Such a fine deed deserves to be rewarded – here’s $5.” said Dad. The next day, Dad is waiting again. Little Johnny shows up with a friend. “Why are you late? and who’s that with you?” asks Dad. “He’s a classmate. We helped two Grannies cross the road!” says Little Johnny. That’s good of you, you deserve $5 each.

Several hours pass before Johnny shows up after school the following day. Behind him are most of his classmates. Surprised, Dad asks, “Why are you so late from school, and who are all these kids?” “They’re my classmates.” says Johnny, “We worked together to help dozens of Grannies cross the road.” “That’s great!” says the father. “Here’s $5 for your efforts.” “But, Dad, since they all pitched in, you should reward them too.” “Helping old ladies cross the road is a simple task. Why did you need so much help?” “Because the grannies resisted.”
