BG’s Positively Speaking

It’s Always Too Soon To Quit

The biggest single reason for failing is because we quit. We quit trying, quit caring, quit dreaming, quit hoping, and quit loving. We will be constantly challenged in all areas of our lives, including our relationships with our spouses, children, parents, friends and associates and in our work or recreational activities

Many years back, I was trying to figure out why I was not meeting with more success.   Nothing seemed to work for me, then during a conversation with a new friend. Who, as it turned out, crossed paths with me for only a short time, but just enough time to teach me a valuable lesson. After asking a few leading questions and listening to my responses, he said to me, “As I see it, you are quitting too soon. Success needs a chance to develop. You need to be more patient.” At that moment, I learned that if we are to achieve success, we must not quit. It requires that we just keep on “keeping on.” There is no quitting time; we must be prepared to go that extra mile. We must give our hopes and dreams a chance to breakthrough.

“Once a task has begun, never leave it till it’s done

Be the labour great or small, do it well, or not at all”. Unknown

Once we move down a path – marriage, profession or any other endeavour – we must not stop. If we are to find success, we must have patience and perseverance.

Some years ago, Dr. Seuss sent out his first book to a publisher; the book was turned down. He kept sending it out, and, finally, the 24th publisher accepted and published it, selling over 6 million copies.  What if Dr. Seuss had Quit?

It’s ALWAYS too soon to quit….but it’s NEVER too late to start!

Hint, Hint!

My wife had been giving me hints for weeks about her birthday present. Finally, the day before her birthday, she said, “I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in 3 seconds.” ‘Okay, I said, I’ve got the hint.” Was she ever surprised when I gave her a bathroom scale.

Behind The Scenes

Airplane:  Considered to be one of the top ten movie comedies ever produced. It grossed its gross production costs in its first three days of release in the USA alone. Here are a few trivia facts about the movie.

  • The exterior shots of the plane while flying use a sound effect of a propeller plane, despite it being a jet. A deliberate jab at the studio, who wouldn’t allow a propeller plane in the movie.
  • The directors were friends with David Letterman and asked him to audition for the Ted Striker role. While they liked his reading, Letterman was uncomfortable at the idea of formally acting and was relieved when they didn’t offer him the part. His audition was shown on his talk show, much to his embarrassment.
  • The Mustang, in the scene where Rex is being brought to the airport, belonged to Robert Hays. He got paid $35 a day for its use, and they used it for two days.
  • Lloyd Bridges had a lot of questions trying to understand his character, motivation, and dialogue. Robert Stack pointed out that the visual gags were so frequent and nonsensical that no one in the audience was going to care. “Lloyd, we are the joke,” said Stack.

The doctor role was Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen‘s first comedic part. He later said he was delighted to get the offer, fearing that he was getting too old for anything but “elderly grandfather” parts. Instead, it led to Nielsen gaining a whole new career in wacky comedies like the Naked Gun movies.

The Words We Use

An explanation of the words and phrases we use in our everyday conversations.

Phrase: Having an ace up one’s Sleeve.

Meaning:  To have a secret plan, idea, or advantage that can be utilized if and when it is required.

Origins:  Back in the Day (The seventeenth century), Most people didn’t have pockets to store things, but fashion gave them oversized sleeves. Naturally, people found a practical use for those sleeves; they used them to keep things in. Unscrupulous card players found that they could hide cards in the sleeves and surreptitiously insert them into the game as and when it was advantageous. Over time magicians used oversized sleeves to conceal items and pull them out, seemingly from nowhere, to the surprise of their audience.

Common Usage:  “Don’t worry, If this plan doesn’t work, I have an ace up my sleeve.”

A Woman’s Prayer

I pray for wisdom to understand my man,
for love to forgive him and patience for his moods.
Because if I prayed for strength,
he wouldn’t be walking around for some time.

A Winning Observation

Jimmy and Mike were waiting at the bus stop when a truck went by carrying rolls of turf. Jimmy turned to Mike and said, “I’m gonna do that when I win the lottery.” “Do what?”  asked Mike. “Send my lawn away to be mowed.” came the answer.

Shampoo Alert

As I was conditioning my hair in the shower this morning, I read my shampoo bottle. I’m now in shock! The shampoo I use in my shower, and it runs down my whole body, says, ‘For extra volume and body. Seriously why have I never noticed this before? Now I understand why I am so ‘Full figured.’ Tomorrow I am going to start using “Morning Glory” dish soap. It says right on the label, “Dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove.” It pays to read the labels.

The Last Word

Don’t stare longingly at the door that has just closed.
Instead, stare expectantly at the one that is about to open.
